What are my areas of study and my minor?
Area 1: Behavioral and Social Science
Area 2: Education
Minor: Marketing
What year am I?
An 8th year senior! ...So, I've streched out my time in college :) But I finally made it!
How do I explain the IDS degree to others?
Well, I basically state that IDS is a major which allows students to graduate with a degree in more than one subject area. The degree suited me because unlike typical majors, with their rigid, mandatory class list, it allowed me to choose classes that interested ME in the fields that I wanted to study. IDS allows you to take upper level classes in three fields, almost like a double-major and a minor.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of an interdisciplinary education?
I think that some of the advantages in interdisciplinary education include: taking classes that interest YOU. Being able to meet a wide variety of people who open your mind to new perspectives. This includes some of the professors in the different majors that you'll meet. Because of the IDS program, I've met great professors that I wouldn't have been able to meet if I had been stuck in one single major. I have also had the oppurtunity to work with some very positive classmates who give me faith in a progressive future. School is valuable because it gives you great contacts for your future...IDS justs helps you expand on the education you'll receive and the people you'll meet, during your time in college.
IDS is also helpful because if you've changed majors multiple times throughout your college career, it does not let all your classes "go to waste." Some of the previous classes you've taken may fit into one of your areas of study which puts you one step forward into finishing your degree.
Disadvantage?
I would say that one disadvantage is the time you will have to devote to your Cornerstone and Capstone classes. It's the reality of college though and if you want that reward of the degree you just have to get through that final push. That's where I am now (and how I felt during Cornerstone) but I know the end is near and that's a great feeling!

Areas: Education and Behavioral & Social Science
Minor: Environmental Studies
I’m a Senior!
I always explain IDS to others as a major that I can do anything with. It’s flexible and inclusive with all of the things I want to do. I get to take a multitude of classes in different areas but they all link together in some way. It makes going to class more interesting and makes me feel like I’m actually learning something I can apply in the real world.
Even though I love my major there are some disadvantages. One being that no one knows what IDS means at all and when I tell them they give me the “so you’re a liberal arts major” look. I fear that future employers may look at this major the same way, but once explained, IDS graduates can be a great asset to many companies. One major advantage of this major is that it turns out well rounded students that are ready for anything, and I think that once employers catch on this major will become a lot more popular.

Concentrations: Commerce, education
Minors: Marketing, history
This is my fourth year at UCF!
I explain IDS as Miley Cyrus would Hannah Montana, being the best of both worlds. As a multifaceted person, I do not want to limit myself with one concentration. Instead, I can focus on the different paths I’d like to take in life and weave the ideas from each together.
The advantages are blatantly obvious in our recession right now. When I graduate in December, I will be prepared to do many jobs because of my major. I would be very limited if I had a major that only centered around one concentration. IDS encourages thinking outside of the box and the major itself teaches you valuable life lessons. Unfortunately, the major is afflicted with many misconceptions. These misconceptions are among students, faculty and potential employers. IDS is not well known and therefore, doesn’t always get the respect it deserves!
